Title: Glory To October
Year: 1976
Artist: Valentin Viktorov (1909-81)
Size (cm): 56.5 x 117.5
Country of origin: Russia /USSR
Valentin Viktorov designed some of the most impressive posters of the post WW2 Soviet era. This design from 1976 is based on a detail from Mukhina’s gigantic Kolkhoznitsa statue, designed for the Paris World’s Fair, 1937. Like the statue, this is a lovely example of socialist realism: crisp, clear and dramatic.
The poster is in a very good condition, un-backed and free from loss. One small tear along the upper edge and two minor folds are visible, the upper right corner is “dog-eared”. The poster is unbacked, with bright, deep colours. The biographical information typical of Russian posters is present along the lower border: printed Moscow 1976, with a print run of 50,000 – this is a very rare survivor in great condition.
